Make Your Own Foaming Hand Soap

Making your liquid hand soap last a bit longer

If you are a fan of foaming hand soap, then you know this type of soap is a great way to lather up. With today’s extra precautions foaming hand soap allows you to see just how much of your hands are getting covered with soap.

In the past few weeks we have been washing our hands more…a lot more! More hand washing means using more soap. And using more soap means that this is just one more thing you need to buy. As we are trying to limit our visits to the store, why not make your own?

Foaming Hand Soap

Making your own is easier than you may think. It’s also more economical than buying a brand new bottle each time you run out.

I always felt that foaming hand soap was a bit of a treat. A treat that came with a higher price tag, more so than regular gel hand soaps. So I went in search for a way to make my own. I knew there must be a DIY technique out there. It didn’t take too many clicks to find one. And this is just one of a few ‘recipes’ I found.

What you will need:

  • A foaming hand soap dispenser. You can easily reuse an empty one
  • Liquid Castile soap ( such as Dr, Bronner’s) or your favorite liquid soap
  • Carrier oil (such as Moroccan oil, Argan oil, almond oil, Jojoba oil – optional but adds a bit of moisture to offset the dryness of the soap)
  • Essential Oil (peony, lavender, peppermint, orange, lemon, etc.)

Instructions:

Soap dispensers come in different sizes so exact measurements of each ingredient will vary. Think of dividing the container into 5 parts, so:

  • 1 part liquid soap
  • 3 parts water
  • 10 to 15 drops of essential oil (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil (optional)
  • 1 part air, which allows for the foaming action

First pour the water into the container. Next, slowly pour in the liquid soap. Then add in the essential oil, then the carrier oil. Screw the lid onto the container and gently swirl to combine all of the ingredients.

Foaming hand soap conserves the amount of actual soap used with each press of the pump. One bottle of a foaming dispenser uses one-fifth the amount of soap that a traditional bottle of liquid soap would use.
