A green smoothie, that’s blue…and brown

Looking for a way to have your chocolate milkshake and drink it too? Yes, please. After gazing at picture perfect recipes on Pinterest and then experimenting on my own, I have a go blend that makes a very close version to the real thing.

I look for ways to add an extra bit of protein and greens in my smoothies, with the end result hopefully not actually green. The magic ingredient here is the cacao powder which adds a boost of antioxidants and a smooth chocolate finish.

A Green Smoothie, that’s Blue…and Brown

Prep Time10 minutes
Course: Drinks
Keyword: bananas, blueberries, green, smoothie
Yield: 2 small smoothies

Equipment

  • blender or food processor

Materials

  • 1 cup greens A mix of spinach and kale work well
  • 3/4 to 1 cup frozen blueberries or a frozen pouch of acai Costco has a big bag of individually frozen pouches of acai
  • 1/2 half banana – raw or frozen
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1 TBSP ground golden flax seed I use Bob's Red Mill
  • 1 TBSP cacao powder I use Navitas Cacao powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 to 1 cup milk of choice I usually use either almond or coconut milk
  • 1 scoop of collagen peptides or your favorite protein powder I use Vital Protein Collagen Peptides

There is no ice used here, as the banana, avocado and frozen blueberries add a nice thickness

Instructions

  • Pre-chop the greens before adding to the blender to avoid any large green pieces the blender may not get ( Iike to eat greens not necessarily drink them ). If you have a high powered blender you may be able to skip this step.
  • Add the chopped greens and the milk to the blender. I do an initial blend to puree the greens.
  • Then add the flax seed, cacao powder, vanilla, protein powder and quickly blend again. I do this step so the powdered ingredients don't stick to the frozen blueberries.
  • Lastly, add the blueberries, banana and avocado and blend one more time.
  • Yes, add the whip cream too..

Notes

This is a great base recipe that can be customized to your tastes!
